I learned the discipline on fire crews, cutting line with the Ukonom Hotshots. You front-load the thinking, then you run the work to done. Line is cut or it is not. The mountain does not grade on effort, and neither, in the end, does the ledger.

Most of what slows a thing down is not the work. It is the stopping: the check-in, the second-guess, the meeting to decide what was already decided. So I try to move the doubt to the front, where it belongs, and then close my mouth and finish.

Ask everything before you begin. Ask nothing once you have.

This is not haste. Haste skips the thinking. This puts the thinking first and the hesitation last, and lets the middle be quiet.

Fewer promises. More finished things.

A thing is not done when it works. It is done when it holds without you.
